LEGALIZATION AND APOSTILLE

In a previous post, we mentioned the Apostille. But what exactly is it?

An Apostille is a procedure used to authenticate a certificate intended for use in a foreign country by adding a specific annotation from an internal authority in the country of issuance. Following the 1961 Hague Convention, which aimed to simplify the process of legalizing documents and certificates, the legalization procedure has become much easier. In countries that are signatories to the Convention, it is no longer necessary to go through diplomatic or consular channels to legalize a document, thereby avoiding additional expenses.

It is important to note that the Apostille will only be accepted as a method of authentication in countries that have adhered to the Convention. For a full list of signatory countries, we recommend visiting the website of the Italian Prefecture, where you will find all the necessary information (including any exceptions).


Types of Documents That Can Be Apostilled:

  • Birth, residence, and civil status certificates, etc.
  • Certificates of enrollment, extracts from the business register, etc.
  • Medical certificates, health clearances, etc., issued by the local health authority (ASL).

Need to Legalize a Document?

In the UK, documents are apostilled by the Legalisation Office.

Important Reminder

Please note that the Apostille itself does NOT usually need to be translated. It serves as an accompaniment and should therefore be presented along with the certified translation of your document.
