Psychologist vs. Counsellor

First, it’s essential to distinguish between the roles of psychologist and counsellor in the UK. While a psychology degree is required to become a psychologist, a degree in psychology is not mandatory to work as a counsellor. Instead, counsellors must complete a training program that lasts between 2 and 4 years, depending on the specialization.

Requirements for Psychologists

To practice as a psychologist in the UK, a doctoral degree is also required. If you earned your qualifications in Italy, it’s recommended to first register with the professional register (Albo) in Italy and then proceed with credential recognition and integration into the NHS (National Health System).

The process can be long and complex but is certainly achievable with patience and persistence.

Temporary Provision for Beginners

For those just starting out or feeling overwhelmed by the bureaucracy, you can apply for a temporary provision. This is a temporary permit to practice certain healthcare professions in the UK and is issued by the HCPC (Health and Care Professions Council) exclusively to EU and Swiss citizens.

The temporary provision does not equate to credential recognition; rather, it provides an opportunity to gain initial experience in a different system. However, it comes with a limitation—you cannot be employed under a full-time contract.

At the end of the temporary permit, it can either be renewed or replaced by full registration with the HCPC.

Once registered with the HCPC, you will receive a permanent provision, allowing you to practice in the UK without restrictions regarding the type of work contract (e.g., part-time or full-time). The required documents include:

• Application form
• Diploma Supplement from your academic program
• Certified translation of your degree certificate with transcripts
• Certified translation of your registration with the Italian professional register (Albo)
• Proof of EU citizenship
• A referee who has known you for at least three years (not a family member)
• A sponsor—an HCPC-registered colleague who can vouch for you
• Proof of having worked in the NHS for a period
