If You Got Married in the UK

To register your marriage in Italy, you must submit the required documents through the Consulate General of Italy.

Before proceeding, here are a couple of important points to remember:

• AIRE registration is necessary to transmit the marriage certificate to the relevant municipality in Italy for transcription.
• Ensure your marital status is updated, confirming that any previous marriages and subsequent divorces have been properly recorded.

Documents Required:

1. A form downloadable from the Consulate’s website, where you will input your personal information.
2. A photocopy of the identity card or passport, including photo and signature, for both spouses.
3. The original marriage certificate.
4. A complete and certified translation of the certificate, with an Apostille from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
5. Send the required documents via Special Delivery to the address of the Consulate General of Italy.

If You Got Married in a Country Other than the UK

The process becomes slightly more complex. In this case, you must contact the Italian diplomatic or consular authority in that country. You’ll need to arrange for the legalization (consular or Apostille) of both the original marriage certificate and its Italian translation.

Additionally, keep in mind the following:

• If the documentation is complete and correct and the process is approved, the Consulate will NOT return the original certificates.
• If the documentation is incomplete or incorrect, the process cannot be completed, and the documents will be returned only if you include a prepaid (Special Delivery) envelope in your submission.
