How to Register a Birth

After registering a newborn’s birth with the local registry office in the area where they were born or at the hospital, you can formalize the entire process at the Italian Consulate in London.

The Role of the Civil Registry Office

The Civil Registry Office manages these services, acting as a “mediator” between residents in England and their municipality of residence in Italy. The office sends a request for transcription of the British birth certificate to the Italian municipality.

Additionally, the office assists Italians with matters related to marriage certificates, civil union records for same-sex couples, divorce decrees involving Italian citizens, and applications for name or surname changes.

What Documents Are Needed?

To register a birth, the following documents are required:

  1. British Birth Certificate (Full Birth Certificate), which typically includes:
    • Place and date of birth.
    • Full name, surname, and gender of the child.
    • Parental details: names, surnames, addresses, places and dates of birth, occupations, and the mother’s maiden name.
This certificate must be complete and accompanied by an Apostille, a form of international legalization issued by the Foreign Office (FCO) that certifies the document’s authenticity.
  2. Request for Transcription Form, signed by both parents regardless of their nationality.
  3. Translation of the Birth Certificate (we can help with this!).
  4. A copy of both parents’ passport or ID card.
  5. If married, you must also include the marriage certificate.

Submission of Documents

Once all the necessary documentation is ready, you’ll need to send it directly to the Consulate. You can find the appropriate address on the official website of the Italian Consulate General.
