Sworn or certified translation?

These two terms always cause a lot of confusion, so let’s clarify right away!

A certified British translation is equivalent to a sworn Italian translation. However, as the legal systems are different, a certified translation can only be used in the United Kingdom and in English-speaking countries, and similarly a sworn translation is only required to present your documents in Italy, as in the United Kingdom this type of translation and related sworn translation does not exist!

Certified translations for secure and legal communication

Certified translations, also known as sworn translations, are a crucial element when it comes to legal documents, contracts, certificates, and other situations that require legal validity.

The introduction of this service is a direct response to the growing demand for certified translations in the country.

We guarantee not only linguistic competence, maximum security and confidentiality of client data, but also an in-depth understanding of the legal systems and regulations in Italy. This ensures that every sworn translation is accurate, compliant and legally recognised.

What is certified translation

Certified translation, also called sworn translation, official translation or simply asseveration, consists of an actual oath sworn by an official translator before an Italian court, for which he or she is responsible and liable both civilly and criminally. This oath is called a translation sworn statement.

On the file, consisting of the original document, the translation and the sworn statement, the court affixes a joining stamp between the pages, the authorised translator signs and stamps each page and the sworn statement, in which (s)he declares the conformity of the translation with the source text. The notary or Justice of the Peace takes note of this and signs and stamps it in turn.

When is it necessary

Sworn or certified translations require a high degree of specialisation. Therefore, they must be carried out by qualified and specialised professional translators.

We talk about certified translations when we are dealing with translations that have legal value, including diplomas, wills, tax, commercial and bureaucratic documents.

The translation of tax documents is essential for many companies that need to enforce their documents in Italy or abroad. It is therefore important that it is entrusted to competent people. A certified translation serves to confer authenticity to the translation of official documents.

Examples of documents requiring certification:

Criminal certificates

Report cards, diplomas, degree certificates

Birth, marriage, adoption, divorce certificates

Driving licenses

Documents for Italian citizenship

Notarial deeds

Now, with our new sworn translation service in Italy, we continue to carry on this tradition of excellence by working with Sara Piccinini, an Italian sworn translator.
