11 Sep How Much Does a Certified Translation Cost in London: Prices, Factors and What to Avoid in 2026
‘How much will it cost?’ It is the first question almost everyone asks when faced with the need to translate an official document. Honest answer: it depends on several factors — but I can give you a clear and transparent picture of prices in the London market, and help you understand what a quality certified translation actually includes.
The Factors That Determine the Price
1. Document Length
This is the main factor. Translation rates are usually calculated per word (the most common method in the UK market), per line, or per page — or at a flat fee for short, standardised documents such as certificates. A 200-word document will cost far less than a 2,000-word one.
2. Language Combination
High-demand languages with a large supply of translators — such as Italian, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese — generally have more accessible rates. Less common or more specialised languages — such as Romanian, Polish, Arabic, Mandarin Chinese, Hindi — may carry higher rates due to fewer qualified translators being available.
3. Text Complexity
A birth certificate has a standard format and takes less time than a 30-page court ruling. Documents with complex legal terminology, difficult handwriting, archaic scripts or unusual formats take more time and therefore cost more.
4. Urgency
The standard service (3-5 working days) has a base rate. The urgent service (24-48 hours) carries a surcharge, generally 30-50% above the standard rate. A same-day service can carry even higher surcharges.
5. Additional Services
If you need notarisation (for documents to be used in countries that require it), an apostille on the original, or assistance obtaining the FCDO apostille, these services carry separate additional costs.
Indicative Prices for the Most Common Documents in London (2026)
These are indicative prices for standard certified translations (3-5 working days), without additional services:
- Birth certificate (1 page): £55 – £90
- Marriage certificate (1-2 pages): £65 – £110
- Italian Casellario Giudiziale / criminal record (1 page): £55 – £85
- Academic diploma or qualification (1-2 pages): £60 – £100
- Divorce decree (Decree Absolute / Final Order, 1-2 pages): £70 – £120
- Notarial deed or power of attorney (2-5 pages): £100 – £200
- Foreign driving licence (1 page): £45 – £75
Prices vary depending on the translator, language combination and document complexity. The values shown represent a realistic range for the London market in 2026.
WATCH OUT FOR UNUSUALLY LOW PRICES: A certified translation at £15-25 is almost certainly produced by automated translation software with minimal human review. The Home Office and consulates systematically reject this type of translation — resulting in wasted time, money and a potential refused application. The apparent saving turns into a much higher cost.
What a Quality Certified Translation Includes
When you pay for a professional certified translation, you are paying for:
- A full translation of the document, with no omissions, carried out by a professional translator who is a native speaker or has equivalent competence in the target language
- Review of the translation for terminological consistency and accuracy
- A signed certification declaration in the correct format for the receiving authority (Home Office, consulate, court, etc.)
- The translator’s professional guarantee of the accuracy of the text
- Availability to clarify any queries from the authority assessing the document
Freelance Translator or Agency: What Changes in Pricing
In general, translation agencies charge higher rates than freelance translators, as they include overheads and a commercial margin. However, an agency does not necessarily offer higher quality than a specialist freelance translator.
The most important thing is not to choose based on the lowest price, but to verify that the translator — freelance or agency — has specific experience with the type of document and the receiving authority. A freelance translator with 10 years of experience in UKVI applications is probably a better choice than a large agency that handles everything.
