Birth Registration for Children Born in the UK: What Italian Citizens Living Abroad Need to Know

For Italian citizens living in the UK, registering the birth of a child is an essential step to ensure proper recognition of Italian citizenship. The Italian Consulates in London and Manchester have recently updated their procedures, introducing new rules for the registration of UK-born minors.

New parents should carefully review the updated requirements before submitting their application to the relevant Consulate.

When Is Italian Citizenship Automatic for Children Born in the UK?

Italian citizenship is not automatically granted in all cases. Minors born in the UK acquire Italian citizenship at birth only if at least one of the following conditions applies:

  • One parent or grandparent was exclusively an Italian citizen (without other citizenships) at the child’s birth or at the time of death;

  • At least one parent, who is an Italian citizen, has legally resided in Italy for at least two years prior to the child’s birth;

  • The child cannot obtain any other citizenship (statelessness cases).

These requirements are critical for the transcription of the birth certificate in Italy.

Italian Citizenship “By Law” (Per Beneficio di Legge)

If automatic citizenship conditions are not met, parents can still apply for Italian citizenship by law, provided that at least one parent is an Italian citizen by birth.

The application must be submitted:

  • Within three years of the child’s birth;

  • At the competent Italian Consulate.

Special Extension:
For children who were minors as of 23 May 2025, an exceptional deadline applies: applications can be submitted until 31 May 2026.
