The birth certificate is one of the most commonly required documents in UK immigration and citizenship applications. Why Birth Certificates Are Required in UKVI Applications

A birth certificate is the fundamental document for verifying a person’s identity, original nationality and relationship to their parents. In UK immigration applications, it is required in several contexts:

• Family visa applications (spouse visa, family visa): to prove a family relationship with a British citizen or UK resident
• ILR applications: as a supporting identity document
• Naturalisation applications (British citizenship): to verify the applicant’s nationality and personal details
• Registration of children born abroad: for the Italian Consulate or for children’s status applications
• British passport application for a minor

Which Birth Certificate Format Is Accepted

For UKVI applications, the full birth certificate is generally required — the one that includes the complete details of both parents (name, surname, date of birth, occupation, place of birth), the name of the informant, and the date and place of registration.

For Italian certificates, the correct document is the full birth certificate (atto di nascita integrale) issued by the Comune of birth. Abbreviated or summary versions are generally not accepted.

IMPORTANT: For applications at the Italian Consulate, the full birth certificate is always required — not an abbreviated extract. Make sure you request the correct document before proceeding with the translation.

What the Birth Certificate Translation Must Contain

The certified translation of a birth certificate for the Home Office must comply with all standard UKVI requirements:

• Full translation of the document (including stamps, headings, annotations and any writing on the document)
• Signed declaration from the translator with confirmation of competence and accuracy
• Translator’s full name and contact details
• Date of translation

It is important that stamps and abbreviations on the document are also translated, not just the main text. An untranslated stamp could raise questions during assessment.

Birth Certificates in Languages Other Than English

If your birth certificate is in Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, French, Polish, German or any other non-English language, the process is the same: full certified translation by a professional translator. An apostille on the translation itself is not required.

Regarding the original document: the Home Office does not require the original document to be apostilled for UKVI applications. An apostille is required when the document is to be used for Italian consular applications or in other countries that require it.

Can I Submit a Scanned Copy?

For most online UKVI applications, the Home Office accepts a clear, legible scan of the original birth certificate accompanied by the certified translation. In some cases — for example for the naturalisation ceremony or for applications requiring original documents — the original paper document may need to be submitted.
